Synapse Reaches a Milestone Achievement: 100,000 MSK Publications

On December 16, the Synapse team indexed it’s 100,000th MSK publication!

Synapse was launched by the library in 2008 with the goal of capturing the intellectual output of MSK via publications. Each month our team searches for newly authored MSK works, vets and enhances all of the citation metadata, creates linkages to PubMed Central, Altmetrics, Dimensions citation counts, and adds them to the correct MSK authors’ profiles.

Some facts about these 100,000 publications:

  • Spans published works from 1985 to current.
  • We add an average of 7,000 publications per year; more than 500 per month.
  • The five journals most frequently published in (excluding meeting abstracts), are: Journal of Clinical Oncology, Cancer, Clinical Cancer Research, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Blood.
  • 65.7% of these publications are Journal Articles, including reviews, editorials, correspondence etc.; 28.2%  Meeting Abstracts; 4.5% Book Chapters/Books; and 1.4% Conference Papers.

A special thanks to our team of dedicated librarians that work each day to ensure these publications are captured and discoverable. This resource supports MSK staff in effectively managing grant compliance, their annual reports, and helping them keep their CV’s up-to-date. NIH Preprint Pilot to Include Preprints Reporting On All NIH-funded Research Starting In Early 2023

Launched 35 years ago in August 1997, PubMed reached the remarkable milestone of adding its 35 millionth citation on December 12th, 2022. Contributing to that content since June 2020 have been the “more than 3,300 preprints reporting NIH-supported COVID-19 research discoverable in PubMed Central (PMC) and PubMed”.

The good news for authors is that the number preprints added to PubMed will continue to grow since:

“The success of the pilot has encouraged NLM to extend the pilot in a second phase to launch in early 2023 that will encompass all preprints reporting on NIH-funded research. For preprints that are authored by NIH-funded researchers and voluntarily posted to eligible preprint servers on or after January 1, 2023, NLM will automatically include the full text of the preprint (as license terms allow) and associated citation information available in PMC and PubMed, respectively.”

New eBook: Encyclopedia of Cell Biology

The second edition of the Encyclopedia of Cell Biology is now available. This six volume set has four main sections: Molecular, Organizational, Functional, Translational and Pathological Aspects of Cell Biology. The second edition is updated, providing greater coverage of specialized cell function and translational applications, and putting greater emphasis on these topics in graduate/medical teaching.

The new version includes a standard template for each chapter, making the content easier to navigate, as well as inserts and graphics which provide summaries of key points in each chapter.
