Cancer Research News

Here are a few highlights of cancer research news that have recently caught my attention:

  • Cancer cases rising rapidly worldwide according to a new report by the World Health Organization (WHO). Death rates from malignant diseases are prominent in developing countries where treatments are limited and detection of disease often comes too late.  For more visit this story from NPR.
  • Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in the Bronx have identified a chemical stem cell signature that predicts whether AML (acute myeloid leukemia) patients will respond to chemotherapy.  Their findings have been published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
  • Chemists at Stanford develop new technique aimed at improving stomach cancer surgery results. More on their innovation can be found in PNAS.

MSK Library: Not Renewing Pivot-COS Subscription

The MSK Library will not be renewing Pivot and access will stop towards the end of February. For over a decade the MSK Library has supported and provided access to Pivot (formerly COS/Community of Science) which has been used by the MSK community to conduct customized grant searches and receive email alerts about upcoming grants in their fields. We recently received our renewal invoice and after an extensive usage analysis, can no longer justify keeping this resource.  For last year we tracked only 206 unique users and the number of user accounts is now less than 100.

With this in mind, we do want to encourage Pivot-COS users to explore SciVal Funding as your replacement for searching and setting up alerts for grant opportunities.  You can access this resource from the Library Website by typing scival in the MSKsearch box and then clicking on the search button. The search results will show a link to this resource under Databases. From the Library Website, you’ll be able to access this product off campus (remotely) via user authentication.  There is also a link to this resource from the Research and Technology Management Intranet page, under Quick Links.
