Investigational Drugs, IBM Watson, Cancer Drug Costs and Awards

A selection of recent news items about MSK and staff….

  • Treatment of tenosynovial giant-cell tumors, a rare disorder of the joints, with an investigational drug (PLX3397) resulted in a prolonged regression in tumor volume in most patients.  The findings from this phase 2 trial were published in the July 30 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.  Lead author is William Tap, MD, Chief of the Sarcoma Medical Oncology Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering.   • IBM Watson has come a long way since gaining fame in 2011 when it was able to defeat two human champions on the TV game show, Jeopardy. Now, Watson EMR Assistant support physicians by providing additional information “…through a process of collaborative problem-solving during which the computer recommends treatment options and explains in natural language what it found in the patient and the literature that led to its conclusions.”  Memorial Sloan Kettering is mentioned. LibGuides Migrate to New Version!

Effective immediately, the MSK Library is pleased to announce a new version of LibGuides.

Welcome to LibGuides 2.0 which offers an enhanced and contemporary experience to our user community. Perhaps the most apparent change with the new version will be the aesthetic view. LibGuides 2.0 is equipped with a sleek and modern-looking feel, conforming to more recent web design and navigation guidelines. Below is a list of key differences worth noting:

  • Better search functionality within a LibGuide – an enhanced search box will appear on each LibGuide page allowing you to access content quicker.
  • Banners can be added to pages – content will be able to span across an entire page, while columns of boxes appear below it.
  • LibGuides homepage will be more intuitive to navigate – easier for you to search and/or browse for LibGuides by topic or Librarian.
  • Mobile-responsive design – LibGuides will be easier to view and access on your mobile device.

New! Handbook of Oncology Social Work

The first edition of the Handbook of Oncology Social Work: Psychosocial Care for People with Cancer has recently been added to the MSK Library collection.

The title, which features a number of contributions from MSK staff, provides a repository of the scope of oncology social workers’ clinical practice, education, research, policy and program leadership in the psychosocial care of people with cancer and their families.

This Handbook equips the reader with all that we know today in oncology social work about patient and family centered care, distress screening, genetics, survivorship, care coordination, sociocultural and economic diversity, legal and ethical matters, clinical work with adults living with cancer, cancer across the lifespan, their caregivers and families, pediatrics, loss and grief, professional career development, leadership, and innovation.
