Three Questions for our Librarians – Johanna

This month I asked three questions to Johanna Goldberg, Research Informationist.

What areas can you help MSK users with?
If you have an information need, I am happy to help you with it. I perform literature searches to inform patient care, publications, presentations, and grant proposals for our patrons. I can also work with you on learning database search techniques, using citation managers, identifying journals for publication, and setting up search alerts on your topics of interest. I also develop and run searches as a part of systematic review teams. In addition, I’m the Clinical Medical Librarian for the Breast Imaging Service.

What projects have you been working on recently?
I just started working at the MSK Library in June, so I’ve been learning the ins and outs of my new workplace. I was at an academic medical library prior to MSK, and I’m adjusting to the somewhat different needs of a hospital library setting. In particular, I’m getting to know my colleagues in the Library, the research needs of our patrons, and the team at the Breast Imaging Service.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I’ve been thinking about domestic travel lately. I’ve visited 25 states and would love to fill in the gaps on my map, which includes most of the Southeast and the West. Road trip, anyone?

Breast Cancer Surgery Can Be Deleterious for Nursing Home Residents

Nursing home residents with breast cancer should consider their overall health before consenting to surgery, concludes a new study in JAMA Surgery. The study reviewed records of nearly 6,000 female nursing home patients who received inpatient breast cancer surgery from 2003–2013. More than half of these residents had cognitive or functional impairments prior to surgery. The death rate of the residents was much higher than average: 30.9 percent died within the year following surgery, a significant increase from the 25 percent nursing home mortality rate. Of those who survived, 58.3 percent experienced a functional decline in the year following surgery. In reporting the study, Liz Szabo of Kaiser Health News spoke to MSK’s Dr. Deborah Korenstein, who found the increased death rate particularly noteworthy as breast surgery is generally considered low risk.

Sharing Libraries in Endnote x8

EndNote is a citation management tool that simplifies manuscript writing. Among the features that EndNote facilitates is author collaboration, including collaboration between co-authors/contributors from different institutions. In support of co-author collaboration, EndNote offers more than one option for sharing their bibliographies.

Please, note that resource license restrictions should be taken into account when sharing EndNote libraries: Full-text PDFs (articles, book chapters, etc.), should be shared only between co-authors from the same institution; or, if applicable, between co-authors from the institutions which license the same resources.  In other instances only references without PDFs, with exception of open access resources, should be shared between collaborators.

A way for co-authors to collaborate in real time using EndNote x8 is demonstrated in the video below.
