Article Usage Count in Scopus and Web of Science

It is well known that the number of times an individual journal article is cited is one of the top metrics of scholarly impact. Still, there are other metrics which may be useful in determining the popularity of an article. One such metric is item usage statistics. In electronic resources, usage statistics may show different aspects of access and usage, for example, number of downloads, abstracts views, etc. Some databases (ex., Scopus, Web of Science) offer limited usage metrics in each record.

In Scopus, usage count is provided via PlumX Metrics (featured in a previous Library blog post). Click on the PlumX Metrics icon located in the right upper corner of each Scopus record to see article metrics, including some usage statistics, as well as exposure of the article in social media.

In Web of Science usage count is built in and provided for each article. Search results can be sorted by usage.

To see the usage count for an article, click on its title in the search result list and scroll down. The usage count can be found on the right hand pane of the record.

Turning Caregiver Distress into Caregiver Support

Dr. Allison Applebaum

Dr. Allison Applebaum

A recent Cancer Today article features the research of Dr. Allison Applebaum, an MSK psychologist whose work focuses on the needs of cancer caregivers.

In a study published in Oncology Nursing Forum earlier this year, Dr. Applebaum and her colleagues asked 17 caregivers to rate their levels of concern for 33 items relating to caregiving tasks, caregiver well-being and self-care, and patient well-being. Ten of the participating caregivers requested additional information on at least one area of concern, and five of the caregivers asked for one or more referrals. Dr. Applebaum is now working on a larger study aimed at using distress screenings to generate targeted caregiver referrals.

Easily Update Your Publications for Reports and CV’s with Synapse

Synapse is curated by a team of librarians that check monthly for new publications by our MSK authors. The team goes through each publication, verifying and enhancing the bibliographic details, and assigning the papers to the appropriate MSK author profiles. With Synapse, the work of searching for an author’s publications is done for you and makes updating this information for reports and CV’s quick and easy.

Here is how:

  1. Locate your Synapse profile. Each profile has a distinct URL that will not change, so you can bookmark the link for future use.
  2. Select the “Works” tab of the profile.
  3. Limit to the year you would like. You can also limit to just “journal articles” if you would like to exclude meeting abstracts and conference proceedings from the results.
  4. Select the style in which you would like the bibliography formatted. A popular one to choose is “NLM” style.
  5. Copy and paste the bibliography into your document—the formatting will be preserved.
