Science and Engineering Indicators 2014

Science and Engineering Indicators 2014The National Science Board (NSB) has released its 2014 Science and Engineering Indicators. The “Indicators” series are biennial, data-rich reports prepared by the National Science Foundation (NSF), providing quantitative information on: science, mathematics, and engineering education at all levels, the scientific and engineering workforce, domestic and international R&D performance, U.S. competitiveness in high technology, and public attitudes and understanding of science and engineering.

The reports examine all federal funding for research and development, and are not limited to the NSF. Here’s an excerpt from the 2014 Overview, p. O-19:

“Federal R&D spending over the last two decades has changed substantially in one respect: health-related R&D has grown sharply, going from 12% of total federal R&D budget authority in FY 1980 to 22% in FY 2011. A corresponding major shift has occurred in the distribution of academic R&D expenditures among S&E fields, which has moved away from physical sciences and toward the life sciences. Data on research space at academic institutions and publications likewise reflect a more dominant role for life sciences in academic R&D.”

MSK Library: Not Renewing Pivot-COS Subscription

The MSK Library will not be renewing Pivot and access will stop towards the end of February. For over a decade the MSK Library has supported and provided access to Pivot (formerly COS/Community of Science) which has been used by the MSK community to conduct customized grant searches and receive email alerts about upcoming grants in their fields. We recently received our renewal invoice and after an extensive usage analysis, can no longer justify keeping this resource.  For last year we tracked only 206 unique users and the number of user accounts is now less than 100.

With this in mind, we do want to encourage Pivot-COS users to explore SciVal Funding as your replacement for searching and setting up alerts for grant opportunities.  You can access this resource from the Library Website by typing scival in the MSKsearch box and then clicking on the search button. The search results will show a link to this resource under Databases. From the Library Website, you’ll be able to access this product off campus (remotely) via user authentication.  There is also a link to this resource from the Research and Technology Management Intranet page, under Quick Links.

NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS)

Need to submit your NIH-funded manuscript to PubMed Central and not sure where to begin?

The NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS) was developed to facilitate the submission process of final, peer-reviewed manuscripts. Check out this video, brought to you by the NCBI, containing step-by-step instructions for submitting files to be archived in PubMed Central.

Manuscripts in a wide range of electronic formats can be submitted, along with associated files that contain figures, tables, or supplementary information.

For more tutorials and to learn how you can comply with the NIH Public Access Policy, see the MSK Library’s NIH Public Access Policy LibGuide.
