If you want to search for a phrase in PubMed, it is best to first try to search without quotation marks. Then scroll down the results page on the right-hand side and look at Search details where you will see how PubMed’s Automatic Term Mapping (ATM) translated the search. Here you will be able to find out if what you entered was indeed searched for as a phrase, meaning the words are found immediately next to each other.
Resource Highlights: Mobile Resources
Now you can access the best biomedical mobile apps in one place: Mobile Resources Selected by the MSK Library. This online tool was developed by librarians at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, so it is especially strong for cancer-related resources. Physicians, nurses, researchers, and other medical professionals can browse by device (Android, Blackberry, iPhone), by professional interest, or in one A-Z list. Also covered are popular e-readers, PDF viewers, and document storage apps that help you access, store and share journal articles on your mobile device.
Although most of the resources are available to anyone, some are mobile versions of content licensed by the MSK Library, so access is limited to those affiliated with the Center. Most of the resources are available at no cost to the user, although some app developers charge a fee. To date, more than eighty mobile resources are described including diagnostic tools, calculators, journals, guidelines, databases, clinical trials, and apps for molecular biology.
As with any library service, the MSK librarians welcome your email or phone call if you have questions or would like guidance in navigating, accessing or downloading apps to your mobile device.
And since new medical and research applications and websites are being developed every day, you can submit suggestions for mobile resources to add. Visit often to find out what’s new.
Launching LibGuides: Custom Research Solution Portals
Today we launched a new service – LibGuides. You can view now or find the link to this resource located in the left navigation bar on the Library Web site.
LibGuides are multimedia web-based portals that connect the user to subject-specific guides presented in an innovative and user-friendly format. These guides are compiled, developed, and maintained by staff. Check out one of our New LibGuides devoted to Mobile Resources and apps!
Many of the LibGuides’ links are to full text documents, and often to RSS feeds, videos, and audio presentations. All the LibGuides are focused on customized topics relevant to the research and medical activities of Memorial Sloan-Kettering.
What’s great is that we get to share our sites with other LibGuide developers and can search and explore over 134,000 guides designed by over 27,000 librarians at over 1,800 libraries worldwide (stats as of 01/20/2011). Now that’s a community of active and like-minded professionals!
To learn more about this new service or to request a LibGuide, MSK staff should contact Donna Gibson.
