Journal of Medical Insights Added to the Collection

The Journal of Medical Insight (JoMI), a medical video journal publishing cutting-edge and standard of care surgical procedures, is new to the MSK Library Collection. JoMI is a valuable resource for a wide variety of users:

  • Attending surgeons: see the most current techniques and keep up with developments in other fields.
  • Residents and Fellows: gain “at the operating room table” access to surgeries with narration by top teaching surgeons.

End-Of-Life Care, Net Neutrality, and more from around the web…

Here are some of the stories bouncing around the internet in recent weeks:

  • Some of the internet’s most popular sites jointed in a protest against the FCC’s proposed net-neutrality laws.  Mozilla, Netflix, Reddit and more placed a “buffering” symbol on their pages to signify what users might see if internet speeds were controlled by those companies willing to pay. The New York Times Bits blog dives a bit deeper.
  • Nature discusses the White House’s new strategy to deal with antibiotic resistance. The Wall Street Journal highlights some of the plan’s criticism in Pharmalot.

Predatory Online Journal Publishers – The List Continues to Grow!

In April 2012, I published a post regarding predatory publishers and shared a story where good intentions went awry. Predatory publishing is a reality and authors need to be aware of its existence.

In the Scholarly Open Access blog, author Jeffrey Beall documents many publishers he feels fit the predatory label. Of particular interest to me was his post on September 11, entitled New Predatory Publisher Copies Look and Feel of BioMed Central.  BioMed Research appears to be a new open access publisher based in India with twenty-one journals attributed to them. While imitation is the best form of flattery – in this case, it definitely is not. BioMed Central is the reputable open access publisher for an author‘s manuscript submission not BioMed Research.
