Three Questions for our Librarians – Robin

This month I asked three questions to Robin O’Hanlon, Associate Librarian for User Services.

What areas can you help MSK users with?
I can help MSK users who want to know more about how the library can help them with conducting research and supporting patient care. It’s my job to assess and promote current library services and try identify new technologies, resources, and services to best support the research, clinical, and education needs of the MSK community. I also have the privilege of overseeing the library’s Research Informationists and Document Delivery team, who are on the frontlines assisting users with their information needs.

What projects have you been working on recently?
I just started at MSK in August, so I have been learning as much as I can about the needs of our user community while getting to know the MSK Library staff. I have started looking at a new metrics system to better track interactions with our users. I’m also beginning to think more about ways we can promote library services through outreach to MSK departments who might not be as familiar with what we have to offer as some of our regular users.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would travel to Uruguay for its rich history and culture. I also love cows and they outnumber people there 4-1.

Three Questions for our Librarians – Johanna

This month I asked three questions to Johanna Goldberg, Research Informationist.

What areas can you help MSK users with?
If you have an information need, I am happy to help you with it. I perform literature searches to inform patient care, publications, presentations, and grant proposals for our patrons. I can also work with you on learning database search techniques, using citation managers, identifying journals for publication, and setting up search alerts on your topics of interest. I also develop and run searches as a part of systematic review teams. In addition, I’m the Clinical Medical Librarian for the Breast Imaging Service.

What projects have you been working on recently?
I just started working at the MSK Library in June, so I’ve been learning the ins and outs of my new workplace. I was at an academic medical library prior to MSK, and I’m adjusting to the somewhat different needs of a hospital library setting. In particular, I’m getting to know my colleagues in the Library, the research needs of our patrons, and the team at the Breast Imaging Service.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I’ve been thinking about domestic travel lately. I’ve visited 25 states and would love to fill in the gaps on my map, which includes most of the Southeast and the West. Road trip, anyone?

Three Questions for our Librarians – Dina

This month I asked three questions to Dina Matsoukas, Research Informationist.

What areas can you help MSK users with?
As a Research Informationist, I can help MSK users with their research by conducting literature searches and providing citation management training and support. As a member of the MSK Library’s Systematic Review Service, I participate in and provide guidance on systematic review and evidence-based practice projects conducted at MSK. I also provide scholarly research/communication support, for example, by helping authors understand quality metrics when evaluating journals to submit their manuscripts to for publication or when documenting and assessing their own record of scholarly productivity.

What projects have you been working on recently?
Over the summer, the MSK Library sees an increase in use by young “researchers-in-training” as MSK offers a variety of student programs (eg. SCORE) and internship opportunities. I always enjoy helping these students navigate the MSK Library’s resources and training them on wonderful resources like PubMed and Endnote that they will hopefully continue using throughout their careers.

What is your favorite meal OR if you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I recently traveled back to my home town of Montreal (Quebec, Canada) and was reminded of how much I miss Montreal bagels. Since you ask: A still-warm bag of St-Viateur bagels might just constitute my favorite meal…along with the cream cheese, smoked salmon, capers and onions that will go on them if you manage to get the bagels home before eating them!
