NEW! AJCC Cancer Staging Manual

The MSK Library has recently added the 8th edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual.  This expanded resource brings t​ogether all of the currently available knowledge on staging of cancer at various anatomic sites.  The latest AJCC resource features 12 entirely new staging systems, a wide range of changed or new staging definitions, and a refined emphasis on a personalized-medicine approach.

The AJCC has taken an extra critical eye towards this edition and, in collaboration with various experts, assembled a list of updates and corrections divided into 4 levels:

  1. Critical Changes. Change is critical for accurate staging. Includes changes to TNM categories, criteria, or prognostic stage groups.
  2. ​Histology/Topography. Corrections and additions made to histology or topography codes.
  3. Clarification. Clarification of concepts in text or definitions that does not affect staging.
  4. Omission. Error of omission that does not affect staging.

The AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, Eighth Edition, can be found in TriCat.  It is located in our Reference section and may be used in library only.

Nobel Prize, Clinical Trials and More…

Surfing the web, I found these stories of interest:

    • The National Cancer Institute released a video on Patient Safety in Clinical Trials:

      • According to ScienceDaily, the University of Virginia School of Medicine has administered the first dose of an experimental immunotherapy for pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The clinical trial participant was a 14 year old patient.
      • As reported in the New York Times, American Scientists Jeffrey Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael Young won the 2017 Nobel Prize for Physiology for Medicine for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling our biological clocks.
