In February 2016, the National Library of Medicine launched a new web interface for MedPix® , a free online database of medical images that has been steadily growing since first being developed in 1984 by Dr. J.G. Smirniotopoulos. MedPix® is a Registered Trademark of the Department of the Army and has been used primarily as a training tool by the military hospital residency training programs of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center.
Now freely-available to all, this database has grown to over 53,000 images from over 13,000 cases, relevant to a number of different specialties (including radiology, pathology, and ophthalmology, etc.), and covers both common and rare cases. The target audience for this resource includes “physicians and nurses, allied health professionals, medical students, graduate nursing students and other post-graduate trainees”.
A link to this resource has been added to the MSK Library‘s Images LibGuide.
