MSK Collaborates with Quest Diagnostics to Test Patients’ Cancer Genes and more…

  • MSK will work with Quest Diagnostics to screen patients’ cancer genes in an effort to pinpoint the most appropriate drugs to treat their conditions. About 34 genes which have the greatest potential to have drugs that can target their mutations, will be tested. MSK will supply information about the tumor and the most promising drugs and clinical trials will be initiated.  It is hoped the initiative will be widened to 341 genes next year.
  • To help young breast cancer patients retain their fertility, which may be lost as a result of chemotherapy, a study from the Cleveland Clinic showed that temporarily stopping women’s monthly cycles may provide protection. In addition, it might result in lengthened survival. MSK’s Dr. Clifford Hudis, Chief of the Breast Cancer Service, believes this finding may be utilized for other tumors as well. Dr. Hudis, who is president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), made his comments at the annual meeting of ASCO taking place in Chicago. The drug which brought about the shutdown of the ovaries, Goserelin, was given to half of the 257 women in the study. Continue reading

New Feature in BrowZine: Multiple Bookshelves

BrowZine, a mobile app that allows you to browse MSK Library journal subscriptions, now has a new feature available to iOS users! You can save favorite journals on up to 4 different bookcases (with 4 shelves on each bookcase). This increases your ability to customize your reading experience. To add journals to your iPad for easy access, follow the instructions below:

  1. Download the app BrowZine or download the update to your iPad via the AppStore.
  2. Choose the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as your library and login with your username and employee ID number.
  3. Tap on the icon for BrowZine library and browse the journals by Subjects: Biomedical and Health Sciences: Medical Specialties O-Z: Oncology.
  4. Scroll to the right under the Oncology category and tap on the journal Cancer (or choose another journal of your choice).
  5. Tap the button Add to My Bookshelf.
  6. Choose the Bookcase (there are 4 to choose from) and shelf (again, 4 to choose from) and drag the journal Cancer on to it.
  7. Notice that you do have the option to name Bookcases and shelves if you want to customize your collection further.

TOXNET gets a New Look!

A leading source of drug and household product label information from the National Institutes of Health, TOXNET has received accolades for its usability and high quality information geared toward various types of user (professional, consumer, lay). The resource has recently undergone a transformation with an entirely new look and feel.

Users now have three ways of searching the TOXNET content: Basic Search, Browse (by keywords or CAS Registry terms), and Advanced Search. Continue reading
