Do You Know? Airport Libraries

If you’ve done any flying lately, you’ve likely found yourself stuck at the airport or on the plane with nothing to do. Perhaps you’ve scoured the airport shops for new magazines and newspapers? Or run-up your credit card on SkyMall? Well, your options have just gotten brighter.

Some airports are now partnering with local libraries and other initiatives to provide eBooks and other resources, at no charge to you. Take a look at this select list of airports, providing a variety of options for your reading and listening pleasure.

  • Manhattan Regional Airport, US-KS
    QR codes throughout the airport send users to the Kansas State Library’s Digital Book eLending page.

  • Philadelphia International Airport, US-PA
    Free Wi-Fi, courtesy of the Free Library of Philadelphia, connects users to the full Library network (Library card required).

  • Harrisburg International Airport, US-PA
    eBook selections available for download (HTML, EPUB, Kindle, Plucker, QiOO Mobile, UTF-8) from the HIA eBook Library.

  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, US-FL
    QR codes throughout the airport send users to the Broward County Library’s collection of public domain eBooks via OverDrive.

  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac), US-WA
    Shelves of books, racks of magazines, and rocking chairs are provided at this satellite branch of the King County Library System. Learn more.

Do You Know? What Happened “Today in History”

Today in History, from The Library of Congress, American Memory provides open access through the Web to a piece of history that took place on the date in question. Site visitors have access to the written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music that document the American experience with the option to search this content.  Search terms such as “medicine” or “scientific discovery” yield interesting results worth investigating. These materials are not only from The Library of Congress but from other participating institutions.
