Here are a few highlights of cancer research news that have recently caught my attention:

  • Researchers at Fred Hutchinson found that young women who smoked for at least 10 years are a high risk of developing ER-positive breast cancer.  The full study is published in the journal Cancer.
  • Major study published in the British Medical Journal cast doubt on the value of mammograms. The project involved 90,000 women and spanned twenty-five years.
  • Prostate cancer patients may experience more complications as a result of radiation than those patients that are treated with surgery.  Findings were published in the journal Lancet Oncology.

Here are a few highlights of cancer research news that have recently caught my attention:

  • Cancer cases rising rapidly worldwide according to a new report by the World Health Organization (WHO). Death rates from malignant diseases are prominent in developing countries where treatments are limited and detection of disease often comes too late.  For more visit this story from NPR.
  • Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in the Bronx have identified a chemical stem cell signature that predicts whether AML (acute myeloid leukemia) patients will respond to chemotherapy.  Their findings have been published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
  • Chemists at Stanford develop new technique aimed at improving stomach cancer surgery results. More on their innovation can be found in PNAS.

Here are a few highlights of cancer research news that have recently caught my attention this month:

  • New data on Lung cancer incidence rates from 2005-2009 are indicating a decrease among women and men in the United States in some states and stable trends in others. Continued efforts on tobacco prevention and control strategies are key to reducing the overall number of cases.
  • Scientists at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute have developed a new computer/mathematical model to predict the behavior of a patient’s tumor and best treatment options. For more, please read ScienceDaily.
  • New Study published in Circulation Research explores the relationship between percentile ranking and citation impact of NIH cardiovascular R01 grant applications for the period between 2001 and 2008.
