Preprint archives can be useful for discovering the most recent research in a scientific field. These archives can serve to supplement traditional searching in major databases and citation indices as they provide a glimpse into research on the cutting edge before it gets published in a scholarly journal. Hence the name “preprint.”

Try the Cancer Subject Subset in PubMed!
PubMed offers the option of limiting a search to a specific subject by using built-in subsets. Cancer is one of the subsets available and the strategy used to create it is regularly revised and updated to maximize relevant retrieval. Here is the description of the Cancer Subset: “This strategy uses terms from the Neoplasms and related branches of MeSH (Medical Subject Headings), cancer-related text words, and MEDLINE journal titles. It was created jointly by NLM (National Library of Medicine) and the National Cancer Institute to facilitate searching for subjects in all areas of cancer, ranging from clinical care to basic research.”
This subset can be used in a PubMed search as cancer[sb]. Example: “health care disparities” AND cancer[sb]
You can also search for a concept (“health care disparities”) and then limit the results to the cancer subset using the filter options in the left sidebar of the database. Both of these methods achieve the same results.
Learning Lab: New MSK Library Training Page!
The MSK Library would like to introduce our new training page called the Learning Lab. This resource offers four content-specific access points from the landing page:
- Citation Management – Learn how to store, organize, manage, and cite your bibliographic references.
- Database Searching – Learn how to effectively search the published literature and other resources.
- Evidence Based Practice – Learn how to formulate clinical questions and identify relevant evidence.
- Publishing & Author Support – Learn how to leverage authorship tools and resources.
Within each of these categories are customized LibGuides and webinars/workshops provided by Library staff, as well as carefully curated vendor training videos and podcasts. Look to the “Legend” in the right-hand column of each page to limit the list of training resources to a specific format type. Also in the right-hand column are “Related Links” which point to a calendar view of scheduled workshops, as well as our Ask-A-Librarian form and New Hire page.
If you would like to arrange for a workshop or a customized session for you or your group, please ask us. Our Research Informationists are available for tailored consultations and custom presentations.
