Cancer Research News: June 19 – July 3

A new Cancer Genomics Portal enables researchers to discover new patterns in data. The portal is developed and maintained by the Computational Biology Center at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Survivors of young adult and adolescent cancers tend to smoke more and exercise less than people without a history of cancer.
Pancreatic Cancer may develop faster with a high fat/calorie diet.
Development of a biomarker panel to screen for pancreatic cancer is underway.

We’re excited to welcome Stephanie Kerns as the new Director of the MSK Library!

With over 25 years of experience leading academic health sciences libraries, Stephanie brings a strong record of innovation, collaboration, and strategic vision to MSK. She joins us from Dartmouth College’s Geisel School of Medicine, where she served as Associate Dean for Health Sciences and Biomedical Libraries.

Stephanie’s leadership journey includes key roles at Oregon Health & Science University, Tufts, and Northwestern. Her expertise in evidence-based practice, research support, and cutting-edge library services will be a tremendous asset to our community.

Please join us in giving Stephanie a warm welcome as she begins this exciting new chapter at MSK!

Today MSK Library's Robin O’Hanlon presented to high school students in MSK’s Bridge to Biostats and Summer Exposure Program on AI Literacy. These programs introduce NYC high school students from underrepresented backgrounds to careers in science, medicine, and research. Students explored how AI tools are shaping science, research, and healthcare and how to use them responsibly and effectively in their own learning. This session wrapped up a 3-part summer curriculum with MSK Library covering AI, misinformation, finding reliable evidence, and academic integrity.

MSK Librarians recently teamed up with Dr. Veronica Rotemberg, Director of MSK’s Dermatology Informatics Program, to offer a customized Systematic Review workshop for the new Dermatology/Cutaneous Oncology fellows.

We love partnering with clinical and research fellows at MSK. Supporting their work from day one is one of the best parts of what we do. “Navigating AI Tools for Searching the Biomedical Literature”

Our librarians, Matsoukas, Konstantina (Dina), Research Informationist, III, and Robin O'Hanlon, Associate Librarian, User Services, led a class titled “Navigating AI Tools for Searching the Biomedical Literature,” in collaboration with MSK’s Office for Scientific Education and Training (OSET). The session was offered to MSK trainees and welcomed around 50 participants, including postdocs, PhD students, summer interns, senior research scientists, Engage Scholars, Research Scholars, and research technicians.

The class explored the strengths and limitations of three widely used GenAI tools for biomedical literature, searching ChatGPT’s Deep Research, Elicit, and Consensus. We also encouraged participants to think critically about the ethical and privacy implications of using generative AI for background research. See some photos below from the session!

It's June and it's Pride month! This is a time to celebrate the diversity, resilience, and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. At the MSK Library, we are committed to fostering inclusion, ensuring equitable access to health information, and creating a welcoming space where all identities are seen and valued.

In honor of Pride, we're proud to share a thoughtful reflection from one of our former colleagues, Antonio DeRosa, a true advocate for authenticity and community.

Celebrating Pride: Antonio DeRosa, Associate Director, Patient & Community Education, Marketing and Communication

“That’s the beauty of the rainbow, right? Up close, the colors might clash or seem mismatched, but when you take a step back, you see something vibrant and beautiful.”

For Antonio DeRosa, this perspective isn’t just a metaphor for Pride Month - it’s a reflection of how he lives and works every day.

“Each of us brings our own experience and identity,” he continues, “and that deserves to be accepted and celebrated.”

Antonio’s career has been shaped by curiosity, purpose, and a deep commitment to health equity. Guided by a passion for empowering communities through education, he has built a distinctive path at the crossroads of healthcare communication, information access, and inclusion.

With a BA in English from SUNY New Paltz and an MS in library and information science from Pratt Institute, Antonio joined MSK in 2010, contributing across the library, editorial services, and radiology teams. After a brief time at Weill Cornell, he earned his EdD in educational leadership in healthcare administration from Aspen University in 2021—further grounding his mission to make health information more accessible, meaningful, and impactful.

He returned to MSK that same year, bringing fresh insight and a continued passion for patient-centered education. In his current role, Antonio leads the development of accessible, inclusive educational materials for patients, caregivers, and the broader community.

This annual conference brings together health information professionals to exchange knowledge, explore new ideas, and return with fresh perspectives to enhance our services to our community. Below we share some insights, highlights, and photos from the conference!

Our research project explored whether citation in policy documents is a research impact evaluation metric that librarians (and researchers, grant writers, etc.) should be incorporating into their workflow when attempting to measure/demonstrate biomedical research impact.
