Resource Highlights: CCRIS

CCRIS is an NLM database that provides carcinogenesis information for more than 8,000 chemicals. The acronym stands for Chemical Carcinogenesis Research Information System. Records in the database are compiled from expert-reviewed test results published in literature scanned by CCRIS: journals, technical reports, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer monographs published since 1976. CCRIS can be searched by the name of the chemical or fragments thereof, by CAS Registry Number, or by subject terms.

For example, a search on stearic acid, a common ingredient in cosmetics, produced twenty records as of this date, sixteen for mutagenicity studies and four for tumor inhibition studies. The records include information about the test system, dose, strain, metabolic activation, method, species and number of animals tested, target tissue, route, results, references, and more. Incidentally, all mutagenicity studies for stearic acid were negative.

CCRIS also allows advanced searching using field qualifiers, Boolean operators, and truncation.

CCRIS is part of TOXNET®. It was developed and is maintained by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
