    • Researchers in Argentina have developed a genetically-modified adenovirus. It’s the kind that causes colds and conjunctivitis, but they’ve trained it to turn its viral strength on cancer.

  • The American Society of Clinical Oncology has published a policy statement in the Journal of Clinical Oncology urging a renewed effort to increase rates of vaccination against the human papillomavirus (HPV) for the prevention of cancer.
  • The National Cancer Institute announced a Blue Ribbon Panel of scientific experts, cancer leaders, and patient advocates that will inform the scientific direction and goals at NCI of Vice President Joe Biden’s National Cancer Moonshot Initiative. In addition, the NCI also announced an online platform for submission of cancer research ideas.
  • The NIH’s Director’s blog recently featured a striking and colorful image of the Rous sarcoma virus from an infected chicken cell. The image was created by University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign graduate student Boon Chong Goh , while using computation tools.
  • An international panel of expert physicians reclassified as noncancerous a specific kind of thyroid tumor, sparing some patients aggressive treatments. The report appears in JAMA Oncology.
