Research News from ASCO and more

Here are a few cancer research news highlights that recently caught my attention:

  • Hormone-blocking drug injections help women preserve fertility while undergoing breast cancer chemotherapy. Results were announced at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
  • Breath test for lung cancer?  Researchers at the University of Colorado may be one step closer as they presented their research at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
  • Changes in brain activity after chemotherapy, also referred to as “chemo brain,” are being closely studied at University Hospital Gasthuisberg of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. Results are published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
  • Research scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine have discovered mutations of ameloblastoma, otherwise known as cancer of the jaw. More on this study can be found in the journal Nature Genetics.
  • New study may change clinical practice for treating prostate cancer.  Administering chemotherapy to advanced prostate cancer patients helped extend life.  More on this study found in the New York Times.
  • Early detection and improved treatment are two factors resulting in a projected increase in cancer survivorship in the US by 2024. The American Cancer Society estimates 19 million cancer survivors 10 years from now.
