Imagine an organization devoted to enhancing public health in the developing world by delivering medical supplies and materials. Got it? Now envision such an organization based in your backyard. The idea in your head is known as the Afya Foundation.
Headquartered in Yonkers, NY, the Afya Foundation is not one to be tied down. In fact, they are a not for profit, health foundation aimed at donating recycled and used/refurbished medical supplies to areas in need. By taking action locally, Afya is able to globally make a difference in health and medicine. Taking weekly trips into the city has afforded Afya and its volunteers strong ties with donation institutions by developing a system conformed to their unique needs. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is among the New York City hospitals that donate to the Afya Foundation. There are also volunteer opportunities for those interested on the How Can I Help page of their web site.
Afya (meaning “good health” in Swahili) began in 2007 and is gaining traction today. Check out the video above for an example of how Afya is making a difference.
