Looking for a book or book chapter? PubMed now indexes books and chapters of books available on the NCBI Bookshelf.

Not only does PubMed supply a PMID for the entire book, it also offers one for individual chapters, making it easy for you when requesting materials through MSK’s  Document Delivery Services (ILLiad). To accomodate this feature, PubMed has made some changes to the display of citations. Citation summaries will display as either ‘Books & Documents’, ‘Free PMC Article’, or ‘Free Article’–making you aware of the type of full-text material retrieved from a search (i.e. book chapter, or article).

In addition, for books and book chapters, PubMed is supplying the NCBI Bookshelf accession number preceeding the PMID for that citation. For more information on this PubMed development, visit the NLM Technical Bulletin.
