This “trick” will show you how to see the latest issue/articles published in a journal that is indexed by PubMed. We can see the latest articles by using the [journal] field code.
Let’s say you want to read the latest issue of JAMA. You can see the most recent articles published in JAMA by following these instructions:
- Access PubMed via the MSKCC Library website. This is important if you want to be able to access the full text PDFs of articles in PubMed. To access PubMed from the Library website, click on the “PubMed” tab on the search box on the front page and then click the “Go” button (you can leave the search box blank).
- PubMed will launch in a new window. In the PubMed search box, type in: JAMA[journal]
- Your search results should be comprised of articles from JAMA in date order. The most recent articles will be first. Some of these articles may not be available in full text, as citations for future articles are deposited in PubMed before the issue goes to print.
- To access the full text of the article, click on the title of the article you want to read. A page showing the article abstract will appear (not all citations have abstracts). Click on the turquoise “Fulltext@MSK” button in the upper right hand side of the page.
PubMed sometimes uses journal abbreviations to index journals. To find out the proper way to enter the journal title that will not result in an error, click on “Advanced Search.” Choose “journal” in the box that says “All Fields.” Then start typing the title of the journal you would like to read. The box will automatically fill in with the correct journal abbreviation. Then click “Add to Search Box” and click “Search” to see the latest articles.
