NIHMS System: Redesigned Interface & New Streamlined Processes

Attention MSK Researchers and Authors – This post is for YOU!

In late January, you may have noticed that the NIH Manuscript Submission (NIHMS) system underwent some welcome changes to include a new page design as well as improvements to the login and manuscript submission processes.

The NIHMS system is used to deposit final peer-reviewed manuscripts that have been accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008. These papers are from research that was supported with NIH funds.

The manuscript submission process has been streamlined and the NIHMS homepage offers a visual illustration of the key steps in the process (Deposit Files, Initial Approval, NIHMS Conversion, Final Approval, PMCID Assigned & Available in PMC).  What is still critical to note, is that the PI, responsible author, or one of the co-authors must still address the initial and final approval emails in order for the paper to move towards compliance and be assigned its PMCID.

Key changes include:

  • NIHMS ID will be assigned to the record only after all files have been uploaded
  • Deposit process has been simplified with explanations and actions in each step
  • PDF receipt must be opened/reviewed in order to advance to next step
  • Reviewer (e.g. PI, author) must add funding information before approving the initial deposit

Additional details about these changes can be viewed in the announcement entitled “New Look for the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NLM Technical Bulletin 2015 Jan-Feb;(402):e5).

In addition, you can still access the NIHMS system through “My Bibliography” when you add a new citation and want to start the submission or compliance step.
