If you have saved search results in RefWorks, a Web based bibliographic management tool, and want to export the data to an Excel spreadsheet, it is possible to do so with a few easy steps.
Once you’re logged on to RefWorks follow these steps:
- Click on “Tools” and then on “Export References.”
- On the next screen, select “References from Folder” and then select the folder of references you want to export to Excel.
- From the list of choices immediately below, select “Tab Delimited.”
- Click on the “Export to Text File” button.
- When the file appears on the screen, save it as a text file.
- Close the text file.
- Open Excel. In order to find your saved file, you need to change “Files of type” from “All Excel Files” to “All Files.”
- Select your file and click on “Open.”
- A “Text Import Wizard” dialogue box will open; make sure the file type “Delimited” is selected; click on the “Next” button; make sure the Delimiters choice, “Tab” is selected; click on the “Next” button and then click on the “Finish” button.
- The spreadsheet will open containing the references. You will note that all fields of the records have been exported to Excel including the abstracts. You can remove whichever fields you do not want and rename the column headings.
