Open Researcher and Contributor iD (ORCID) is a registry of persistent identifiers for researchers and scholars from around the world. When you register with ORCID, or better yet, with ORCID@MSK, you’ll be assigned a unique 16-digit identifier and a profile page (ORCID record) that you can populate with your Biography, Employment History, Education & Qualifications, Works (publications), Funding information and links to other profile pages.
Why is this a good thing? Here are the library’s top five reasons:
Reason 5 – More and more systems and publishers are requesting or even mandating that you have this unique identifier. For example, the Journal of Clinical Oncology is requiring that authors include this 16-digit URL at time of manuscript submission.
Reason 4 – You get to populate your ORCID record and manage just how much information you want to share about yourself. While ORCID records are public, all users have the option to associate a privacy level (who can view) to each work – everyone, trusted parties (e.g. MSK Library), or only you.
Reason 3 – ORCID saves you time. Once you enter the information in your record, you can reuse as often as you like. You can also look to ORCID@MSK and other sources to integrate your publications in your record by simply following a few steps!
Reason 2 – ORCID helps to prevent mistaken identity and eliminate author name ambiguity.
Reason 1 – ORCID improves recognition for you and provides a venue for you to showcase your research. You ORCID record can serve as your “master” record and is not tied to your institution.
