Open Access Information
Open Access Week October 19-23, 2009
About Open Access
The Open Access (OA) initiative supports making scholarly peer-reviewed
articles freely available on the Internet, either immediately or after
a defined embargo period. The focus is on world-wide, barrier-free,
open access to the full text of research and creative literature, using
a funding or economic paradigm that differs from current journal
publishing models. For more information, Peter Suber, a leader in the
Open Access movement, has written an excellent overview.
Please also see our Open Access FAQs.
Open Access publishing provides benefits to:
- Clinicians. Clinicians around the world have free access to the latest peer-reviewed evidence to treat patients and improve treatment outcomes. Physician scientist Ida Sims speaks about the value of open access publishing, especially of clinical trials, to her work.
- Researchers. Researchers have access to the latest papers to inform their own work. In addition, papers published as open access have a greater impact on their field than non-OA papers. There is also literature that support the Effect of Open Access on Citation Impact.
- Patient Care and Public Health. Patient care and public health both benefit when practitioners and the public have access to free, high-quality information about disease prevention and treatment options.
- The Scientific Enterprise. Science progresses by making use of previous discoveries, techniques and technologies. The pace of science and research accelerates when more researchers have access to more published peer-reviewed scientific and technical articles.
