Laptops for Loan - Frequently Asked Questions

The most frequently asked questions concerning use of our laptops are listed below. For additional information or to submit a question, please contact Ask a Librarian.

Who can borrow a laptop?

Borrowing is limited to registered Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Hospital for Special Surgery, Rockefeller University, and Weill Cornell Medical College Library users with valid identification.

Where do I go to borrow a laptop?

Laptops can be checked out from the Nathan Cummings Center located in the Rockefeller Research Laboratories Building, Main Floor, turn left when you enter and the CyberLibrary Café located on the first floor of the Zuckerman Research Center, 69th Street entrance.

Where may I use the laptop?

Laptops must only be used in the Nathan Cummings Center or the CyberLibrary Café. Taking a laptop outside of these areas is not permitted.

What is the loan period?

Laptops can be checked out from the Nathan Cummings Center, Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, or the CyberLibrary Café, Monday - Thursday, 8:00 am - 3:30 pm, and Friday, 8:00 am - 3:00 pm, for up to two hours. Renewal is at the discretion of the library staff.

What kind of equipment is available?

There are Macintosh and PC laptops at both locations.

Can personal software and documents be saved to the laptop?

MSKCC domain users can save their files to their network drives. Wireless users who wish to save their work must provide their own storage device/s. Any content saved to the hard drive will be deleted on a regular basis.

Am I able to access the Internet with the laptop?

All users may access the Internet using the MSKGUEST network.

Can I connect to the secure wireless network?

The latest version of Nortel VPN Client software is installed on all laptops. MSKCC users with remote access privileges may use their credentials to log into the secure wireless network. For more information email Ask a Librarian or call Reference Services at 212-639-7439.

What software/hardware is available on the laptop?

Software programs include Microsoft Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and EndNote X. Installation of additional software or changing setting is prohibited.

Can I print from the laptop?

Yes, but you must use a PC laptop with a network cable and only from the MSKCC domain.

Where do I return the laptop?

Users must deliver the laptop, accessories (i.e. mouse, adapter, and internet cable), and all internal components to a library staff member personally no later than 30 minutes before the library closes or after two hours of use.

Can I call ahead to reserve a laptop?

Yes, you can. To reserve a laptop, call the MSKCC Library Reference Line at 1-212-639-7439, and we will hold one for you for 15 minutes.

What if I need help?

Reference Librarians are available at both the Nathan Cummings Center and the CyberLibrary cafe to assist users with any issues that may arise with their borrowed laptop.
